“…In both examples, VCs are placed at the centre of the CEA, discussion of results is placed in the context of planning and management decision making, and the value of robust underlying data is evident. Diggon et al (2022) provide important insight into the broader decisionmaking, conflict resolution, and technical architecture required to develop collaborative marine plans informed by CEA. These approaches provide guidance to ensure CEA research contributes to the design and delivery of policy, which should be emphasized in future assessments.…”

“…The process included stakeholder engagement and in 2015 produced the Central Coast Marine Plan (MAPP, 2015), which delineated a network of spatial management zones (Figure 1). MaPP, however, could not legislate MPAs that exclude or limit fisheries; under federal law only DFO, not an MaPP partner, has that authority (Diggon et al, 2020).…”

“…To address these data gaps and in response to stakeholder concerns about perceived declines in kelp, the Marine Plan Partnership (MaPP), a partnership between the Province of BC and 16 coastal First Nations (Diggon et al, 2020), initiated a collaborative regional kelp monitoring program in 2018 with many partners that is intended to improve understanding of the distribution, abundance, biomass, and condition of kelp, document changes over time, and identify pressures on these systems across the BC coast. Data are collected using a variety of remote sensing methods, including WorldView and Landsat satellite imagery, multispectral data from plane-based surveys, and localized UAS imagery coupled with in situ data, including kayak/skiff and SCUBA surveys.…”
