In one experiment, it was found that maximal membrane surface tension was exceeded at mean cellular volume of 98.5 fL, leading to cell rupture (7). Other investigations have shown that normal erythrocytes will begin hemolyzing when placed in a saline concentration of Յ0.5%, corresponding to an osmolality threshold of approximately 170 -180 mOsm/L (7,8).…”
