Effects of isolation on food habits were evaluated in isolated military field settings and in a laboratory simulation. Variety is an important variable in isolation with some personnel preferring a great deal of menu variety and others only a few high preference items. Sweets-desserts clustered as an important variable in isolation. In the laboratory simulation, intake declined on the final two days, preferred frequency was the best predictor of consumption, and 24-hour recall diaries showed both omission and quantity estimation errors.
