A light Higgs boson with substantial branching ratio into invisible channels can occur in a variety of models with: light neutralinos, spontaneously broken lepton number, radiatively generated neutrino masses, additional singlet scalar(s) and/or right handed neutrinos in the extra dimensions of TeV scale gravity. We study the observability of the W H and ZH modes at LHC with H decaying invisibly, by carrying out a detailed simulation with two event generators (HERWIG and PYTHIA) and realistic detector simulations (GETJET and CMSJET). We find that the signal with 'single lepton plus missing E T ' resulting from W H production suffers from a very large background due to the (off-shell) W * production via the Drell-Yan process. In contrast, the ZH mode provides a clean signal in the 'dilepton plus missing E T ' channel. By exploiting this second signature, we show that invisible branching ratios of Higgs bosons, BR inv , larger than ∼ 0.42(0.70) can be probed at 5σ level for M H = 120(160) GeV respectively, assuming an accumulated luminosity of L = 100 fb −1 .

Measurement of the mass and width of the W bosonThe OPAL Collaboration AbstractThe mass and width of the W boson are measured using e + e − → W + W − events from the data sample collected by the OPAL experiment at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 170 GeV and 209 GeV. The mass (m W ) and width (Γ W ) are determined using direct reconstruction of the kinematics of W + W − → qqℓν and W + W − → qqqq events. When combined with previous OPAL measurements using W + W − → ℓνℓν events and the dependence on m W of the WW production cross-section at threshold, the results are determined to be m W = 80.415 ± 0.042 ± 0.030 ± 0.009 GeV Γ W = 1.996 ± 0.096 ± 0.102 ± 0.003 GeV where the first error is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to uncertainties in the value of the LEP beam energy. By measuring m W with several different jet algorithms in the qqqq channel, a limit is also obtained on possible final-state interactions due to colour reconnection effects in W + W − → qqqq events. The consistency of the results for the W mass and width with those inferred from other electroweak parameters provides an important test of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions. The nucleon elastic electromagnetic form factors are fundamental quantities needed for an understanding of nucleon and nuclear electromagnetic structure. The evolution of the Sachs electric and magnetic form factors with Q 2 , the square of the fourmomentum transfer, is related to the distribution of charge and magnetization within the nucleon. High precision measurements of the nucleon form factors are essential for stringent tests of our current theoretical understanding of confinement within the nucleon.Measurements of the neutron form factors, in particular, those of the neutron electric form factor, have been notoriously difficult due to the lack of a free neutron target and the vanishing integral charge of the neutron. Indeed, a precise measurement of the neutron electric form factor has eluded experimentalists for decades; however, with the advent of high duty-factor polarized electron beam facilities, experiments employing polarization degrees of freedom have finally yielded the first precise measurements of this fundamental quantity.Following a general overview of the experimental and theoretical status of the nucleon form factors, a detailed description of an experiment designed to extract the neutron electric form factor from measurements of the neutron's recoil polarization in quasielastic 2 H(e, e')lH scattering is presented. The experiment described here employed the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility's longitudinally polarized electron beam, a magnetic spectrometer for detection of the scattered electron, and a neutron polarimeter designed specifically for this experiment. Measurements were conducted at three Q 2 values of 0.45, 1.13, and 1.45 (GeV/c) 2 , and the final results extracted from an analysis of the data acquired in this experiment are reported and compared with recent theoretical predictions for the nucleon form factors. Next, I would like to thank those who I credit most for my development: Jim Kelly and Andrei Semenov. At times, I found Jim's extremely high standards and desire for rigor to be exasperating, especially during the development of our simulation code and discussions of formalism (e.g., the "dreaded" Wigner rotation!), but, in retrospect, I am glad that I was constantly challenged to do something in an even better way and never permitted to give up. Indeed, I didn't fully appreciate the rigor of our analysis until our results were final, but hindsight is always 20/20. Also, I thank Jim for numerous comments and suggestions on this thesis; it is much better and much more complete because of his many suggestions. Andrei was the true guru (read: czar) of our analysis efforts, and he instilled in me the importance of careful work.I especially appreciate Andrei's timely responses to the numerous questions I always had concerning the analysis and the various analysis tools that we used; if there was someone who was sure to know the answer, that person was Andrei.
