The Mediating Role of School and Sibling Bullying in the Relationship between Subjective Well-Being and Mental Health Symptoms

Abstract: Recently, empirical studies have indicated an association between well-being and mental health. The nature of this association remains unclear since some studies suggest it is weak, whilst others indicate it is strong. The present study seeks to contribute to this dialogue by modelling not only the relationship between well-being and internalising and externalising mental health symptoms but also by introducing a mediation model where school and sibling bullying, as risk factors, are acting as mediators. A nat… Show more

“…Research studies have noted that internalising and externalising MHS display some comorbidity where a common trait underlies exposure to both domains of psychopathology (Willner et al ., 2016 ). Evidence coming from behaviour genetics (Cosgrove et al ., 2011 ; Lahey et al ., 2011 ) and survey (Goodman et al ., 2010 ; D'Urso and Symonds, 2022 ; Katsantonis, 2022 ) research suggests that internalising and externalising MHS are strongly correlated. Hence, we aimed to identify common MHS subtypes of internalising and externalising developmental trajectories in order to examine the degree of comorbidity between these broad types of MHS.…”

“…Subjective wellbeing has been conceptualized to include an affective component (experiencing positive and negative affect, moods and feelings) and a cognitive element (satisfaction with different aspects of life and with life as a whole, namely overall LS) (Diener et al, 2002 , Rees et al, 2013 ). Admittedly, there is less consensus on the definition of eudaimonic wellbeing compared to hedonic wellbeing (Katsantonis, 2022 ; Vik & Carlquist, 2018 ), and most existing research explored the developmental relationship between wellbeing and MH focusing on LS (Lyon et al, 2014 ; Fergusson et al, 2015 ; Patalay & Fitzsimons, 2018 ; Bieda et al, 2019 ). Therefore, in this study, we are focusing on LS.…”

“…Furthermore, subjective socio‐economic status has been connected to higher SE (Bannink et al, 2016) and SWB (Patalay & Fitzsimons, 2016). Bullying is also known to influence SWB (Katsantonis, 2022; Marquez & Main, 2021) and SE (Guo et al, 2022). Finally, feelings of safety are an important antecedent of SWB (Patalay & Fitzsimons, 2016) and SE (Birndorf et al, 2005).…”
