The mediating roles of cancer‐related rumination in the relationship between dispositional hope and psychological outcomes among childhood cancer survivors

Abstract: The present finding supported hope as a significant positive factor for childhood cancer survivors, which was associated with PTG and better psychological adjustment. The findings may inform development of therapeutic intervention programs aimed at increasing childhood cancer patients' hope levels, which may be correlated with more positive cancer-related thoughts and better adjustment. The present study, which examined survivors diagnosed at young age, may enrich existing studies on the effect of onset age an… Show more

“…The results of 18 studies 7,12,15,21,27,34,35,43,45,48,56,[58][59][60][61][62][63][64] were synthesised. Thirteen analyses were conducted for the relationship between PTG and the following correlates: gender, age at diagnosis, age at survey, time since diagnosis, time since treatment completion, socio-economic status, PTSS, social support, quality of life, optimism, pessimism symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and symptoms of depression (see Table 1).…”

“…5 The lack of differences between CCS and controls can be explained by resilience, which describes the strengths and abilities of CCS who can bounce back from the stress and challenges they face, and eliminate, or minimize negative outcomes. [16][17][18][19][20] Response shift is also another explanation: as a result of health state changes, a person may undergo changes in internal standards and values. 15,21 As reported in the previous study, CCS with brain tumor or bone/soft-tissue sarcoma had significant high and severe late effects.…”

“…As a result, the number of childhood cancer survivors has greatly increased. However, completion of cancer treatment does not represent an endpoint, since childhood cancer survivors can potentially face adverse health‐related consequences related to their cancer and treatments (Hsiao et al, ; Yi, Kim, & Tian, ; Yuen, Ho, & Chan, ). There are also challenges associated with the treatment of comorbid conditions, such as diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and neurocognitive problems, in these childhood patients (Dixon et al, ; Henderson, Friedman, & Meadows, ; Iyer, Balsamo, Bracken, & Kadan‐Lottick, ; Robison & Hudson, ; Yi et al, ).…”
