Sexuality is a relatively neglected topic in discussions of aging. Recent research indicates that continuing sexual expression is an important contributor to health and well‐being throughout life. Aging‐related physiological changes do not inevitably result in declining sexual function. Many aging persons remain sexually active. Levels of activity depend on individual and couple physical and mental health, attitudes about sex in later life, relationship status and quality, and socioeconomic context. Adults need information about maintaining sexual activity and relationships throughout life. Healthcare professionals need education and the willingness to discuss sexuality with older patients.
