The Met Office Unified Model Global Atmosphere 7.0/7.1 and JULES Global Land 7.0 configurations

Abstract: Abstract. We describe Global Atmosphere 7.0 and Global Land 7.0 (GA7.0/GL7.0): the latest science configurations of the Met Office Unified Model and JULES land surface model developed for use across weather and climate timescales. GA7.0 and GL7.0 include incremental developments and targeted improvements that between them address four critical errors identified in previous configurations: excessive precipitation biases over India, warm/moist biases in the tropical tropopause layer, a source of energy non-conse… Show more

“…Therefore it is likely that most models using these types of activation parametrization produce excessive aerosol activation in their lowest model levels. HadGEM3-GA7 (Walters et al, 2017b). Throughout most of the northern hemisphere land masses, when fog is present, the predicted droplet numbers are in excess of 150 cm .…”

“…We use an aquaplanet setup of the Global Atmosphere configuration version 7.1 (GA7.1) of the Met Office Unified Model (Williams et al, 2018). The GA7.1 configuration is based on the GA7.0 configuration, described in detail by Walters et al (2017). Williams and Bodas-Salcedo (2017) evaluate the cloud simulation of the GA7.0 configuration with Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) forcing.…”

“…The resolution of the simulation is N96 (i.e., 1.875 • ×1.25 • ) in the horizontal and 85 model levels in vertical. On top of the standard GA7.1 version described in Walters et al (2017), a modified microphysics scheme is used.
