The methodological application of goal attainment scaling in pediatric rehabilitation research: a systematic review

Abstract: GAS is a clinically useful tool for measuring progress toward goals, but has not been utilized with a high level of methodological rigor in research. Emphasis on reduced variation in administration and interpretation will strengthen the utility of GAS for efficacy and program evaluation in future research. Implications for rehabilitation Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) can be used across a diversity of interventions and diagnoses as an outcome measure in pediatric rehabilitation. Careful consideration should be … Show more

“…Use of GAS to set goals enables families to participate in OT interventions in ways that are meaningful to them. Use of GAS to measure participation and satisfaction with therapy outcomes is consistent with the literature (Harpster et al , 2019; Herdman et al , 2019).…”

“…In addition, GAS-based rehabilitation recently was shown to result in significant motor function improvements compared with standard rehabilitation in a randomized controlled trial of patients with Parkinson disease 36 as well as high patient satisfaction with treatment of chronic lower back pain 37 . Still, the most persuasive evidence until now comes from research in pediatric rehabilitation, in which GAS has been broadly used and could detect meaningful change, as experienced by patients and caregivers, in most studies 38 .…”

“…Each participant contributed to their own goals using the Goal Attainment Scale (Steenbeek et al, 2007 ), a tool designed to standardize the setting and scaling of goals in a way that allows for both improvement and regression as a result of intervention. GAS has been used to show meaningful change across a range of diagnoses and intervention types in pediatric rehabilitation (Harpster et al, 2019 ). Goals were collaboratively identified starting with what was important to the participant (“I want to be go from the 1 mile distance to the 5K distance in the race, but it is a big jump and I am not sure I can do it”).…”
