The methodological integrity of critical qualitative research: Principles to support design and research review.

Abstract: This article articulates principles and practices that support methodological integrity in relation to critical qualitative research. We begin by describing 2 changes that have occurred in psychological methods over the last 15 years. (a) Building on foundational work advocating for epistemological pluralism, guidelines on how to design, review, and report qualitative and mixed methods have been advanced to support methodological integrity in keeping with a diversity of researchers’ aims and approaches. “…After reading each interview and making notes, the author identified codes (meaning units) related to information in the interview sections. In order to ensure trustworthiness, two other researchers read and analysed three interviews, and the coding scheme was adjusted accordingly [ 32 , 33 ]. The codes were then grouped into higher-order nodes that reflected the relationship between codes within and across the interviews.…”

“…If the same object exists under specific conditions of time and space, its properties and properties will differ, and its character can change completely. Therefore, the study of human problems must be associated with their inner relationship and the elements that make up Nguyen Trai's human philosophy (Levitt et al, 2021).…”

“…Finally, Levitt et al (2021) respond to the changing landscape of qualitative methods in psychology with an article about how researchers should maintain and enhance methodological integrity in critical qualitative inquiry. They observe that qualitative research's popularity has brought with it unique challenges, particularly in the context of a discipline that does not provide most of its members with robust training in qualitative methods (Rubin et al, 2018).…”

“…Qualitative and mixed methods research is not inherently social justice research. However, it can be conducted as/for social justice, and this takes intentionality and action throughout the research process (see Levitt et al, 2021). What Luker (2008) called "canonical" approaches to social science continue to influence qualitative research design in psychology by prioritizing validity, reliability, and parsimony in the process of representation.…”
