PurposeSomatic growth is an important indicator of health in children. Adequate organ growth is essential in growth and directly related to body growth. We consider renal length as a surrogate of organ growth in growing children. Measurement of weight, height, and many anthropometric indices, such as body surface area (BSA), body mass index (BMI), and Rohrer and Kaup indices, are used to evaluate growth status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between renal length and somatic parameters and analyze the affecting factors for renal size during growth.MethodsThe data for renal length in 66 children (age, 12.9±15.6 months; male/female, 34/32) were obtained. Each kidney was measured with ultrasonography and dimercaptosuccinic acid scan. The data on age, sex, height, and weight were obtained from the medical records. BSA, BMI, and Rohrer and Kaup indices were calculated from measured height and weight. BSA was calculated by 2 methods, and is expressed as BSA I and BSA II.ResultsThere were significant correlations between renal size and age, weight, height, BSA I, BSA II, and Rohrer index. In the regression analysis, the most significant contributing factor to renal growth was height (R2=0.636, P<0.001).ConclusionHeight seems to be the most important factor associated with organ growth in growing children. Further studies to evaluate adequate organ growth should be carried out.

Microalbuminuria (MA) is a well-known predictor of cardiovascular disease and mortality in adults. However, these relationships remain unclear in adolescents. A few studies on association between MA and obesity have been conducted in adolescents. However, the association between MA and growth parameters such as height has not been studied, despite the fact that adolescence is a period of rapid physiological change. We, therefore, aimed to evaluate the association between MA and growth parameters, and the association between MA and obesity related cardiovascular risk factors after adjusting for growth. The study included 1,459 adolescents (847 boys and 612 girls) aged 12-18 years who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011)(2012)(2013). A urine albumin/ creatinine ratio (UACR) of 30-299 mg/g in a morning urine sample was considered to reflect MA. MA was detected in 53 (3.6%) including 24 girls. Height z-score of adolescents with MA was greater than that of normoalbuminuric adolescents (0.87 vs. 0.38; P < 0.01). Upon multiple regression analysis, UACR was associated with lower weight z-score (β = -0.100, P < 0.01) and higher height z-score (β = 0.069, P < 0.01). In term of cardiovascular risk factors, the UACR was not associated with fasting glucose, high-densitylipoprotein cholesterol, or triglyceride levels. Adolescents with MA tend to be thin and tall. MA is not a useful screening method for obesity-related cardiovascular risk in adolescents, but instead MA is associated with taller height and lower weight, growth-related parameters in adolescence.

Background: Aeroallergen sensitization is related to the coexistence of allergic diseases, but the nature of this relationship is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship of polysensitization with allergic multimorbidities and the severity of allergic diseases. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional analysis of 3,368 Korean children aged 6-7 years-old. We defined IgE-mediated allergic diseases based on structured questionnaires, and classified the sensitivity to 18 aeroallergens by logistic regression and the Ward hierarchical clustering method. The relationship of polysensitization (positive IgE responses against 2 or more aeroallergens classes) with allergic multimorbidities (coexistence of 2 or more of the following allergic diseases: asthma, rhinitis, eczema, and conjunctivitis) and severity of allergic diseases was determined by ordinal logistic regression analysis. Results: The rate of polysensitization was 13.6% (n = 458, 95% CI 12.4-14.8) and that of allergic multimorbidity was 23.5% (n = 790, 95% CI 22.0-24.9). Children sensitized to more aeroallergens tended to have more allergic diseases (rho = 0.248, p < 0.001), although the agreement between polysensitization and multimorbidity was poor (kappa = 0.11, p < 0.001). The number allergen classes to which a child was sensitized increased the risk of wheezing attacks (1 allergen: adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.22, 4 or more allergens: aOR 9.39), absence from school (1 allergen: aOR 1.96, 3 allergens: aOR 2.08), and severity of nasal symptoms (1 allergen: aOR 1.61, 4 or more allergens: aOR 4.38). Conclusion: Polysensitization was weakly related to multimorbidity. However, the number of allergens to which a child is sensitized is related to the severity of IgE-mediated symptoms.
