The microbiota revolution: Excitement and caution

Abstract: Scientific progress is characterized by important technological advances. Next-generation DNA sequencing has, in the past few years, led to a major scientific revolution: the microbiome revolution. It has become possible to generate a fingerprint of the whole microbiota of any given environment. As it becomes clear that the microbiota affects several aspects of our lives, each new scientific finding should ideally be analyzed in light of these communities. For instance, animal experimentation should consider a… Show more

“…Barrier tissues such as the skin or gut are constantly exposed to environmental stressors and densely colonized by the commensal microbiota . The healthy non‐inflamed human skin harbors around one million T cells/cm 2 , most of them being of a resident phenotype .…”

“…Unfortunately, both observational and intervention studies gave conflicting results, leaving great uncertainty on the role of the microbiota in lithogenesis [7]. In the last decade, advanced omics techniques have allowed deep sequencing and functional characterization of gut microbial communities at an unprecedented level [11]. Thus, the early physiological concept of the gut-kidney axis in nephrolithiasis has been brushed up in light of the so-called microbiota revolution [7].…”

“…The term virome is also used to refer to viral metagenomes, which are the overall collection of genetic material isolated from viral like particles (VLPs) in a given environment ( Haynes and Rohwer, 2011 ). Recently, the human microbiome field has witnessed a big revolution following the unprecedented advances in sequencing technologies ( Rescigno, 2017 ). Yet, the human virome research is still lacking behind when compared to studies addressing the prokaryotic component of the human microbiome ( Zou et al, 2016 ).…”
