The Modification of A* Pathfinding Algorithm for Building Mechanical, Electronic and Plumbing (MEP) Path

Abstract: This paper introduces a modified A* pathfinding algorithm that can be used in building Mechanical Electronic Plumbing (MEP) path design by revising nodes selection process and post-processing. The pathfinding algorithm is used when a computer calculates the optimal path in a given space by algorithmizing how humans intuitively calculate the optimal path. As construction technology is gradually advancing, buildings with large and complex internal structures are increasing, so there is a need to automatically op… Show more

“…Moreover, the integration of machine learning in construction planning and scheduling has streamlined these processes, offering substantial economic benefits. Automated methods backed by years of extensive research have proven successful in minimising costly oversights, accelerating project timelines, and increasing project efficiency [31,[39][40][41].…”

“…The construction industry is also trying to develop as a new AI-based industry. Following this trend, terms including robot, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone, digital twin, building information modeling (BIM), machine-learning, AI, and metaverse are now common in the construction industry [4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…Many efficient algorithms have been proposed for routing them since the 1970s [1,2]. Since pipes are utilized in various applications [3][4][5][6], the paradigms, domain representation methods, and limitations of these published algorithms are different. However, they share a common aspect: The target pipes are exposed conduits.…”

“…These pipes are invisible and inaccessible to us but we rely on them to deliver ventilation air, tap water, electrical power, digital signals, and natural gas such that decent living and working conditions can be maintained. In construction industries, these pipes are included in the Mechanical Electronic and Plumbing (MEP) systems and must be carefully planned prior to the construction of the buildings [6][7][8].…”
