The Momentum Distribution of Liquid $$^4\hbox {He}$$

Abstract: We report high-resolution neutron Compton scattering measurements of liquid 4 He under saturated vapor pressure. There is excellent agreement between the observed scattering and ab initio predictions of its lineshape. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations predict that the Bose condensate fraction is zero in the normal fluid, builds up rapidly just below the superfluid transition temperature, and reaches a value of approximately 7.5% below 1 K. We also used model fit functions to obtain from the scattering data empi… Show more

“…Figure 4(b) shows also a leastsquare fit of the form n 0 (T )/n 0 (0) = (1 − (T /T c ) α ) (full line) to the experimental data of Ref. [41] (diamonds), for which we find α = 4.56 [44]. Note how this fit encom- passes reasonably well also the values calculated at unitarity within the GMB approximation (dots).…”

“…The dynamic structure factor S(Q, E) of liquid 4 He was recently measured by Prisk et al [38], using the neutron Compton scattering technique. In the impulse approximation, S(Q, E) and consequently the neutron Compton profile can be calculated from the 1-body momentum distribution n(k).…”

“…MCViNE simulations were also performed to study the effects of instrument broadening on measured data. For example, detailed MCViNE simulations of powder 4 He data measured at ARCS [9,10] and single crystal spin-wave data for V 2 O 3 measured at SEQUOIA [11] were used to examine and confirm the material and resolution models.…”
