The multi-faceted Swedish Heureka forest decision support system: context, functionality, design, and 10 years experiences of its use

Abstract: For several decades, computerized forest decision support systems (DSS) have helped managers and decision makers to analyze different management options and supported the search for preferred management alternatives. In Sweden, a country rich in forests and with a long tradition in intensive forest management, such systems have been developed and available since the 1970s. Changes in societal as well as in forest owners’ preferences and objectives in the 1990s led to a need for forest DSS handling broader pers… Show more

“…The development and wood production of the productive forest in the study area for the three scenarios were simulated 50 years into the future, using the forest decision support system (DSS) for long-term analysis and planning of the forest landscape Heureka PlanWise (version 2.18.3.0) (Lämås et al 2023 ). A simulation period of 50 years was chosen because it is the next decades that are decisive regarding the future of traditional, natural pasture-based reindeer husbandry, and because uncertainties regarding the tree layer development increase with longer time periods.…”

“…The planning horizon in this study was 50 years, divided into 10 periods of 5 years. The forest decision support system Heureka (Lämås et al 2023) was used to generate potential TPs and to project forest developments for each DU and TP. The Heureka system, developed by SLU, consists of four applications for forest planning aimed at dealing with different planning questions and scales.…”

“…LP is a powerful tool when applicable but can unfortunately not deal with spatial problems such as clustering of treatments (without transforming the problem to an MIP). We used the stand approach to solve planning problems with a Model I in the optimization application of Heureka PlanWise software (Lämås et al 2023). For each DTU solution produced, we identi ed a corresponding solution using stands and LP, constituting cases 3-1a, 3-1b, 3-2a, and 3-2b.…”
