“…PC1 associated with EOF1 also displays notable multidecadal variability but with changes on a slightly shorter time scale, especially in periods before the 1960s. These results differ from previous studies (e.g., OrtizBevia et al, 2016;Skliris et al, 2012) because we focus on the multidecadal variability and have removed the impacts of anthropogenic forcings from the SSTA. In winter, the leading EOF mode can explain 71% of the total variance in the MSMV.…”

“…Our results show that the NAO has weak coherence with the MSMV and cannot explain the seasonality of the MSMV. Although both our results and previous studies (e.g., Mariotti & Dell'Aquila, 2012;OrtizBevia et al, 2016;Skliris et al, 2012) show that the AMV is significantly correlated with the MSMV, it is doubtful that the AMV affects the MSMV through oceanic processes given that both the AMV and the MSMV in the EM can persist throughout the year, whereas the MSMV in the CWM occurs only in summer. If oceanic processes were dominant, the AMV signal advected by the Atlantic inflow should propagate from the CWM to the EM, and consequently, the MSMV should also persist throughout the whole year in the CWM.…”

“…En escalas decadales, la AMO (Ortiz Bevia et al, 2016;Zampieri et al, 2017) influye en la duración del verano en el SO de Europa (Peña-Ortiz et al, 2015) así como en los regímenes de tiempo de la región mediterránea en verano. Además, se ha encontrado como, desde finales de los años 70, existe un acoplamiento entre las anomalías de precipitación asociadas al monzón de la India y las del SO de Europa (Lin et al, 2017).…”
