Abstract: Car bon is the fourth most abundant element by mass in the universe after hydrogen, helium and oxygen. The chemistry of carbon is both ancient and ubiquitous, with applications ranging from fine jewellery to heating, textiles, pharmaceuticals, energy and electronics.
