For over a decade the ATSR series of sensors produced high quality SST data products, but the narrow swath did not encourage their use for operational tasks. This changed in 2005 when the European Space Agency's Medspiration Service introduced AATSR data in the GHRSST L2P format. This paper describes the opportunities provided by the Medspiration system for facilitating the complementary use of SST products from AATSR and from other satellite sensors. It explains how, following the implementation by Medspiration of GHRSST procedures, data products and tools, AATSR data are now being used around the world to complement the use of other sources of SST and to facilitate bias adjustments between them. Despite the limited daily coverage of AATSR its broadly reliable accuracy and stability seem to be beneficial to SST analyses that merge all available observations. The new analyses are already contributing to improved ocean and weather forecasting. This represents an unforeseen but significant role for the ATSR series, through which it continues to make an important contribution to the operational uses of SST. Highlights► The Medspiration Project pioneered operational SST data to GHRSST specification. ► It demonstrated the utility of a matchup database for evaluating SST data quality. ► It developed a high resolution diagnostic dataset for comparing SST products. ► Producing AATSR SST data in GHRSST L2P form led to new operational applications. ► AATSR data are routinely used in several global analyses of sea surface temperature.

A new diurnal warming parameterisation has been developed which allows the shape of the diurnal sea surface temperature (SST) signal to change in response to meteorological fluctuations during the day based on an extensive examination of over 300 diurnal cycles. The parameterisation estimates the diurnal variation in temperature at the surface and at 1 m over a local day based only on wind and insolation measurements averaged over several different periods of the day. The parameterisation is validated against independent data and is compared against other existing parameterisations. Results show that diurnal warming estimates are more accurate when daily fluctuations in wind and insolation are taken into consideration and the new parameterisation captures some of the variability of the shape of the diurnal SST cycle which other parameterisations are unable to achieve. The parameterisation is currently being trialled in the European Space Agency MEDSPIRATION project (a contribution to the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment High Resolution SST -Pilot Project) as a possible method to account for the diurnal variability in satellite measurements.

SUMMARYWe propose and demonstrate a fully probabilistic (Bayesian) approach to the detection of cloudy pixels in thermal infrared (TIR) imagery observed from satellite over oceans. Using this approach, we show how to exploit the prior information and the fast forward modelling capability that are typically available in the operational context to obtain improved cloud detection. The probability of clear sky for each pixel is estimated by applying Bayes' theorem, and we describe how to apply Bayes' theorem to this problem in general terms. Joint probability density functions (PDFs) of the observations in the TIR channels are needed; the PDFs for clear conditions are calculable from forward modelling and those for cloudy conditions have been obtained empirically. Using analysis fields from numerical weather prediction as prior information, we apply the approach to imagery representative of imagers on polar-orbiting platforms. In comparison with the established cloud-screening scheme, the new technique decreases both the rate of failure to detect cloud contamination and the false-alarm rate by one quarter. The rate of occurrence of cloud-screening-related errors of >1 K in area-averaged SSTs is reduced by 83%.
