The N-Pact Factor, Replication, Power, and Quantitative Research in Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly

Abstract: In the current study, a 20-year span of 80 issues of articles (N = 196) in Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly (APAQ) were examined. The authors sought to determine whether quantitative research published in APAQ, based on sample size, was underpowered, leading to the potential for false-positive results and findings that may not be reproducible. The median sample size, also known as the N-Pact Factor (NF), for all quantitative research published in APAQ was coded for correlational-type, quasi-experimental, an… Show more

“…Thus, ranking journals in this field may be particularly instructive for uncovering the extent to which potential problems with research design and planning exist in social/personality psychology. For applications of the NF to related fields, see Martin and Martin (2021), Kossmeier et al (2019), Reardon et al (2019), andSchweizer andFurley (2016). We report how we determined our sample size, all data exclusions, all manipulations, and all measures in the study.…”

“…Finally, the social constructionists' emphasis on the context certainly has merit. The replication crisis (Martin & Martin, 2021) can partly be seen as evidence that research results are sample specific because of their context dependency. Psychology However, when research results show evidence of replication, it suggests that mind based qualities such as resilience can transcend context specific influences such as the sport type or country (Atkinson & Martin, 2020;Martin et al, 2015;Martin et al, 2022).…”
