The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX)

Abstract: The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) was established in 1976 to assist users of water data to identify, locate, and acquire needed data. NAWDEX is a confederation of water-oriented organizations working together to provide more timely and convenient access to their data. A directory of sources of water data and a nationwide index of available water data are maintained for the storage and dissemination of information on available water data. Assistance services are provided through a nationwide network of … Show more

“…The objectives of NAWDEX are to define available types of water data, where and how the data are stored, and how they may be obtained. An overview of the history and structure of NAWDEX has been published by Edwards (1976 codes to provide for the inclusion of ground-water data in STORET (Hampton, 1976, p. 54-56). As of 1977, STORET has no efficient way to store lithologic or site-inventory data which are not logically time-dependent.…”

“…The U.S. Geological Survey's Office of Water Data Coordination has been designated as the coordinator of water-data acquisition activities by more than 30 Federal agencies. The exchange of water data is facilitated by the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX),a National confederation of water-oriented organizations working together to improve access to water data (Edwards, 1977). The Kansas District Office, one of 63 NAWDEX assistance centers, annual-ly processes more than 300 requests for sources of water information.…”

“…A generalized representation of the major steps between the collection of data and the nutrient and detritus load results presented in this report is shown in figure 15. All waterquality analyses and stage-discharge records are published annually and are also accessible through NAWDEX (Edwards, 1977 were set aside primarily for computation of the water budget and transport of nutrients and detritus. The computer program to calculate transport, ARQA LOAD ( fig.…”
