The Need for Standardization of Mass Transfer Measurements in Absorption and Desorption

Show more

“…Kunze et al 171 outlined a collaborative project with two academic and several industrial partners, including packing vendors and end users with the aim of developing standards for mass transfer measurements in absorption and desorption, for both experimental apparatus and evaluation methods. In view of rate-based simulation results, the effect of experimental configuration, and that of the possible measurement errors are also to be evaluated.…”

“…Such agreement is important to validate any test facility throughout the world. The work in progress by Kunze et al [36] is a promising approach as the industry partners are involved.…”

“…Such approaches are also needed for absorption and desorption processes as well as random packing materials and trays. Hoffman et al [8] and most recently Kunze et al [36] reported research activities on the standardization of mass transfer measurements for absorption and desorption processes. Lastly, tray and packing vendors as well as the applying industry have to agree on these standards.…”

“…For distillation, standardised methods to determine mass transfer parameters are common practice and defined in literature (Arlt and Onken, 1990;Zuiderweg, 1969;Ottenbacher et al, 2011). In the past, various authors motivated the development of a standardised method for mass transfer measurements in absorption and desorption (Hoffmann et al, 2007;Rejl et al, 2009;Kunze et al, 2012). A standardised determination of parameters leads to an enhanced reliability and comparability of mass transfer parameters determined in literature, which results in a reduction of safety factors for the design of absorption columns.…”

“…Especially for large scale applications of absorption processes with high gas volume flows, e.g. CO 2 capture in fossil fuel power plants, an overdesign of the equipment results in a drastic increase of investment and operating costs (Kunze et al, 2012).…”
