“…It is well known that newspapers are influenced by their environment including ownership, funding, need for circulation, advertisement revenue and the readers preference for reading like-minded news (Abbring & Van Ours, 1994;Allport & Faden, 1940;Anderson, 2009;Bulkow, Urban, & Schweiger, 2013;Carragee & Roefs, 2004;Gentzkow & Shapiro, 2010;George, 2007;Gilens & Hertzman, 2000;Illia, Lurati, & Casalaz, 2013;McCauley, Blake, Meissner, & Viswanath, 2013;Price, 2003;Reddaway, 1963;Reese, 2001;Roberts & McCombs, 1994;Schudson, 2002;Shoemaker, Vos, & Reese, 2009;Sill, Metzgar, & Rouse, 2013;Weaver & Elliott, 1985;White, 2013;Winseck, 2002).…”

“…Reese (2001) also refers framing as "organising principles that are socially shared and persistent over time, that work symbolically to meaningfully structure the social world" (p. 11). Simply put, framing targets the cognitive aspect of its audiences in order to bring about an impact in their perceptions (see Carragee & Roefs, 2004;Endres, 2004;Gevorgyan, 2010;Scheff, 2005;Goftman, 1974;Simon & Xenos, 2000).…”

“…As noted by Zhou & Mou (2007), news framing are influenced externally by the political system, political culture, and prevailing notions among the public (Zhou & Mou, 2007). Carragee & Roefs (2004) also point out that media frames do not develop in vacuum, but are shaped by actors or claim-makers through series of competition. These actors may include politicians, organizations, and social movements.…”

“…That is, framing can be used to imply what part of messages are valuable and thus shape public opinion (Callaghan & Schnell, 2005). As exemplified in Malaysia, what should be selected and what is salient within how messages are framed, routinely favour the political elite (Carragee & Roefs, 2004;Vliegenthart & van Zoonen, 2011). How all this relates to the audiences of the Government's framing is less known as are what is likely to emerge from their conversations and what contention may arise (Vliegenthart & van Zoonen, 2011) as people actively construct meaning from framed messages (Goffman, 1974).…”

“…A basic premise is that, framing is very much related to the contexts (Carragee & Roefs, 2004;Matthes, 2009) as meanings depend on the context in which frames are encountered (Chong & Druckman, 2007). This suggests that frames taken out of context are often meaningless.…”
