Abstract:Mechanical loading can contribute to articular cartilage homeostasis due to its anabolic effects, for example the stimulation of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) synthesis. During degenerative joint diseases, such as osteoarthritis, the ability to respond adequately to mechanical stimulation may be compromised. The neuropeptide and pain mediator αCGRP has previously been associated with osteoarthritis and is typical for sensory nerve fibres, but chondrocytes also possess the receptors for αCGRP and have been shown to r… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
