The neuroprotective role of endocannabinoids against chemical‐induced injury and other adverse effects

Abstract: Considerable progress has been made, recently, in understanding the role of the endocannabinoid system in regard to neuroprotection. Endogenous cannabinoids have received increasing attention as potential protective agents in several cases of neuronal injury. The endocannabinoid system is comprised of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), their endogenous ligands (endocannabinoids) and proteins responsible for their metabolism. Endocannabinoids serve as retrograde signalling messengers in GABAergic and glutamat… Show more

“…Acupuncture combined with electroacupuncture could decrease plasma glutamate levels, which were found significantly increased in rats during acute migraine attacks, and thereby relieving pain [55]. Endocannabinoid system activation, which has been proven to exert analgesia and neuroprotection [56, 57] is believed to be another mechanism of action of acupuncture on migraine patients [58]. …”

“…Pretreatment with EA has been shown to increase the production of endocannabinoid 2-AG and AEA, which elicit neuroprotective effects against transient cerebral ischemia through CB1 receptors Zogopoulos et al, 2013). These results suggest a novel mechanism of EA pretreatment-induced rapid tolerance to focal cerebral ischemia.…”

“…Specifically, (2) It is not trivial to calculate the exponential of the R matrix since it is non-diagonal and asymmetric. It must be calculated by the following series expansion (we used 80 terms in the series), and R n is the matrix multiplication of R by itself n times: (3) To simplify calculations, we assumed that AM5206 at these three sites have the same T 1 value and used the fact that the pairs of exchange rate constants are related by relative populations as measured by I jj (0): (4) Therefore, there were only four adjustable parameters in R, namely, k 21 , k 13 , k 23 , and T 1 . Figure 6 shows simultaneous fits of the three diagonal peaks and the three pairs of cross peaks using the following parameters: k 21 = 115 s −1 , k 13 = 1 s −1 , k 23 = 47 s −1 , and T 1 = 0.5 s.…”
