The neuropsychological basis of childhood psychopathology

Abstract: A clear link exists between neurological dysfunction and psychopathology in children, as evidenced by research on the sequelae of developmental childhood brain impairment, the neuropsychological investigation of children with psychiatric disorders, and neuroimaging research. Understanding the neuropsychological basis of a disorder helps teachers, parents, and children better understand the etiology of the disorder and guide classroom interventions. Additionally, identifying morphological markers of childhood m… Show more

“…School psychologists with specialized training in neuropsychology are arguably not only the best prepared to provide individualized assessment in multitiered systems, but may also be the best prepared to function in consultation roles with educational personnel on atypical neurodevelopment in children. Additionally, school neuropsychologists are perhaps the best prepared to rapidly incorporate advancing research from multiple areas including medicine, psychopharmacology, and neuroscience, as well as psychology and learning theory to an educational context (Davis, 2006).…”

“…Meerdere onderzoeken tonen aan dat het cerebrum van kinderen met autisme tot twaalf jaar een groter volume heeft in vergelijking met een gezond kind van die leeftijd (Bailey et al, 1998;Davis, 2006). Hierbij moet vermeld worden dat een persoon met autisme en een gezond iemand bij de geboorte een gelijk cerebraal volume hebben.…”

“…Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is increasingly being leveraged in developmental research to assess how neural functioning during childhood and adolescence relates to psychiatric disorders (e.g., Daivs, 2006;Dapretto et al, 2006;Forbes et al, 2006;Levitin et al, 2003), developmental stage (Pruett et al, 2015) and to improve diagnosis (e.g., Emerson et al, 2017;Luking et al, 2011;Philipsen, 2006). FMRI research focused on brain regions involved in olfaction can potentially help to bridge gaps in our knowledge of the role abnormal olfactory processing plays in the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders.…”
