The New Aesthetic of DIY-Materials

Abstract: Materials embedded in artifacts determine the user's materials\ud experience and influence the aesthetic perception. Currently, the widely use of\ud perfect and homogeneous industrial materials is dictating our experience and guide\ud our perception. However, In the last years, a new phenomenon where designers\ud seem interested on recuperating control of the development and the design of\ud materials is emerging. This phenomenon is known as DIY-Materials and is a way for\ud designers to self-produce materials… Show more

“…Changes and developments that can also be seen are the increasing variety of materials used as materials for the creation of craftworks. DiY materials usually derive from the transformation of the unconventional source (e.g., grown vegetables, animal constituent, basic mineral, recuperated waste or modification of standard material with any available technology) (Ayala-Garcia & Rognoli, 2017).…”

“…In terms of a social and environmental perspective, sustainability of materials, revived materials and bio-based materials, are frequently occurring issues in design programs, which gives a design project multi-levels of meaning and interpretation. Besides, the generation and development of novel materials such as DIY materials (Rognoli et al, 2015;Ayala-Garcia & Rognoli, 2017) and ICS materials (Rognoli et al, 2017;Parisi et al, 2018) are getting into the designer's and design educator's eyesight. Students are beginning to actively create new materials to achieve their design expression.…”

“…DIY materials are usually derived from recycled materials or from sources that are not mainstream, e.g. vegetable and fruit shells, demolition waste, minerals, and unused parts of plants or animals [5,13]. A DIY material should be easy to use, non-toxic, harmless, and easy to transform.…”

“…Such materials can be designed through the creative use of natural substances. They can be a source of richness concerning perception and aesthetics in design [13]. Furthermore, they can contribute to the solution of evergrowing environmental problems by the use of simpler, less hazardous processes.…”
