The new insight of prostate-specific antigen reduction during finasteride therapy in aging men

Abstract: When baseline PSA level was greater than 4 ng/mL, the doubling rule could be used for screening. When baseline PSA level was less than 4 ng/Ml, the doubling rule might not be an accurate predictor. We can use the PSA rise from nadir or proPSA to predict prostate cancer.

“…The PSA levels were not the true PSA levels. Some of the patients were undergoing treatment with 5-alpha reductase inhibitors like Finasterid (Finasterid 5 mg, PharmaCoDane, Herlev, Denmark) or Dutasterid (Avodart, PharmaCoDane, Herlev, Denmark) which affects the PSA levels, halving the actual level (16).…”

“…Consequently, since the 1990 th 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors like Finasteride were used to treat prostate hyperplasia, with a castration like effect [3,4]. In a new study it shows, that Finasteride could reduce the PSA level by approximately 40 % during therapy, however in those cases the volume of the prostate hyperplasia was not affected and did not correlate with the PSA [5]. There is an overall link between prostate cancer and PSA serum levels.…”
