Background The COVID‐19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges in all fields of society with social, economic, and health‐related consequences worldwide. In this context, gastroenterology patients and healthcare systems and professionals have seen their routines changed and were forced to adapt, adopting measures to minimize the risk of infection while guaranteeing continuous medical care to chronic patients. Objective At this point, it is important to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on this field to further improve the quality of the services provided in this context. Methods/Results/Conclusion We performed a literature review that summarizes the main aspects to consider in gastroenterology, during the pandemic crisis, and includes a deep discussion on the main changes affecting gastroenterology patients and healthcare systems, anticipating the pandemic recovery scenario with future practices and policies.

There has been a shift toward the use of digital technology worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. People are advised to stay at home to maintain physical distancing and reduce risks of infection. Clinical services are put to minimum operations and routine endoscopic services have been inadvertently halted. With no definitive treatment of the viral disease up to now, lockdowns and mitigation efforts have been extended. In effect, clinicians resort to other feasible and creative means to continue their practice in the attempt to move forward and achieve normalcy. As gastroenterologists, we adapt and respond using different technological opportunities to be able to resume our clinical practice with utmost priority on safety. Fellows continue their training with the blended method of limited patient encounters and maximized digital learning. Digital tools that can be used include telemedicine, eHealth, internet, social media, and video conference platforms. Newer innovations such as wearable technologies, virtual realities, and artificial intelligence endoscopy could also be tapped. Nevertheless, there are perceived barriers in the practice of technology and these should be adequately addressed.

Training of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in Asia faces challenges of the ever‐increasing demand for skills to handle a growing range of both diagnostic and interventional EUS procedures, and a continual shortage of EUS training programs. To keep up with the pace of development in EUS, more short‐term EUS programs have been conducted across Asia in recent years. In this aspect, the Asian EUS Group (AEG) has taken the lead to fast‐track the dissemination of EUS knowledge and skills across Asia through its multinational network of training centers. AEG's programs are brought to wherever there is demand. Its versatile modular structure allows the program to be easily customized and scaled up or down to align to local needs, making it highly adaptable to the changing and varying needs in different countries. Even with the current pandemic situation, it has been able to continue its training efforts through the use of technology, including webinars, and live case demonstration.
