The next generation of knowledge management: Implications for LIS educators and professionals

Abstract: Knowledge management (KM) has been an evolving field over the past 35 years. We have seen the field emerge from developing the institutional memory of the organization to increasing innovation to building more internal and external effectiveness. The Library and Information Science (LIS) community has had a great role to play in KM, and as we reflect on the progress of KM over the years, we can learn from our past and project towards the future. The aim of the paper is to present the overview: what is the hi… Show more

“…In addition, Library and Information Science (LIS) experts will continue to play a role in KM. Still, for KM to survive and thrive, they must integrate and adapt to the changing organizational contexts (Liebowitz & Paliszkiewicz, 2019). KM in academic institutions could help grow learned-centered knowledge and action learning movement from closed to open knowledge systems and development in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) (Maligat et al, 2020).…”

“…KS practices accelerating KS among employees include but not limited to; social networking, mentoring and reverse mentoring, education and training, observation and apprenticeship. As organizations continue their digital transformation, Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals will have to be aware and utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and other skill sets, which will add value to KM in the coming years (Liebowitz and Paliszkiewicz, 2019).…”

“…The classic expression, in the early days of KM, illustrates the focus on the organization's own knowledge and information: "If only Texas Instruments knew what Texas Instruments knew" (Davenport and Prusak, 1998;O'Dell and Jackson, 1998). Liebowitz and Paliszkiewicz (2019) make the point that Borko's (1968) classic definition of "information science," probably not bettered to this date, is so inclusive that there is no functional part of KM that is not included within it.…”

“…There are many future directions for LIS to pursue related to KM because of the potential benefits of KM for the LIS profession (Liebowitz and Paliszkiewicz, 2019). In the following, two such directions are identified and will be discussed: the semantic web, and concept identification and retrieval.…”
