Contract cheating and ghostwriting are forms of misconduct that are unethical and a serious academic issue, especially among healthcare professionals, as they directly impact patient health. To date, research on this area in the Middle East has been limited. Therefore, we used a validated self-administered questionnaire to investigate the awareness, perceptions, and reasons for these behaviors among 682 students in health specialties at five universities in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The majority of the students (60.1%) were unaware of the terms “contract cheating” and “ghostwriting,” and 69.5% had not received any prior training on integrity. However, having prior training had a positive effect on awareness levels, and respondents attending private universities were significantly more aware than those attending public universities. The factors that contributed to contract cheating behavior included poor time management, English language difficulties, and a lack of writing skills. These findings emphasize the need for integrity training at the national level to raise awareness.

PurposeTo protect information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and resources against poor cyber hygiene behaviours, organisations commonly require internal users to confirm they will abide by an ICT Code of Conduct. Before commencing enrolment, university students sign ICT policies, however, individuals can ignore or act contrary to these policies. This study aims to evaluate whether students can apply ICT Codes of Conduct and explores viable approaches for ensuring that students understand how to act ethically and in accordance with such codes.Design/methodology/approachThe authors designed a between-subjects experiment involving 260 students’ responses to five scenario-pairs that involve breach/non-breach of a university’s ICT policy following a priming intervention to heighten awareness of ICT policy or relevant ethical principles, with a control group receiving no priming.FindingsThis study found a significant difference in students’ responses to the breach versus non-breach cases, indicating their ability to apply the ICT Code of Conduct. Qualitative comments revealed the priming materials influenced their reasoning.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors’ priming interventions were inadequate for improving breach recognition compared to the control group. More nuanced and targeted priming interventions are suggested for future studies.Practical implicationsAppropriate application of ICT Code of Conduct can be measured by collecting student/employee responses to breach/non-breach scenario pairs based on the Code and embedded with ethical principles.Social implicationsShared awareness and protection of ICT resources.Originality/valueCompliance with ICT Codes of Conduct by students is under-investigated. This study shows that code-based scenarios can measure understanding and suggest that targeted priming might offer a non-resource intensive training approach.

Distance learning and online evaluation created challenges for academic integrity because academic dishonesty has become widespread. The article deals with actual problems of observance of academic integrity in higher educational institutions in Ukraine generally and during the transition to online training. Analysis of divergent world’s rankings is demonstrated the close interrelation among the quality of educational system and total level of economic welfare and prosperity of the country, where academic integrity is a primary indicator of the quality of education. Today Ukraine has a lot of actual problems of observance of academic integrity in higher educational institutions generally and during the transition to online learning. Based on the world experience of observance of academic integrity, Ukraine needs profound transformational change. Results demonstrated that it is necessary to form a new policy-making of academic integrity and a new culture in universities in Ukraine, where the dedication of academic integrity should become fundamentally important for any open and democratic society. Higher educational institutions should bear primary responsibility for maintaining academic integrity in the academic society, perform their main assignments effectively, and each participant should be given a certain role, rights, obligations and responsibility.
