The Noncell Autonomous Requirement of Proboscipedia for Growth and Differentiation of the Distal Maxillary Palp during Metamorphosis ofDrosophila melanogaster

Abstract: The Drosophila maxillary palpus that develops during metamorphosis is composed of two elements: the proximal maxillary socket and distal maxillary palp. The HOX protein, Proboscipedia (PB), was required for development of the proximal maxillary socket and distal maxillary palp. For growth and differentiation of the distal maxillary palp, PB was required in the cells of, or close to, the maxillary socket, as well as the cells of the distal maxillary palp. Therefore, PB is required in cells outside the distal ma… Show more

“…MP development requires the Hox genes Deformed (Dfd) (Merrill et al, 1987) and proboscipedia (pb) (Pultz et al, 1988) (Fig 2A). pb is responsible for the formation of the proximal-distal axis of the MP (Percival-Smith et al, 2017) and ectopic expression of pb in the eye-antennal disc leads to homeotic transformation of antennae in to MPs or legs (Benassayag et al, 2003;Cribbs et al, 1995;Held Jr, 2002;Kaufman, 1978). Dfd is also expressed in the MP field (Diederich et al, 1991) and loss of Dfd leads to a complete loss of the MPs (Merrill et al, 1987) (Fig 2).…”

“…Second, the head-specific HOX genes that are expressed in the embryonic progenitors of the larval head segments (notably the Antennapedia-Complex genes labial , Deformed , and proboscipedia ) are not expressed in the embryonic cells that are set aside to form the nascent eye-antenna disc ( Younossi-Hartenstein et al 1993 ). Instead, expression of these genes, which specify segmental states in the adult head, is only first observed in the eye-antennal disc around the time the A/P segregation occurs ( Diederich et al 1991 ; Chouinard and Kaufman 1991 ; Lebreton et al 2008 ; reviewed in Jürgens and Hartenstein 1993 ), or in the case of proboscipedia even later, during the pupal period ( Percival-Smith et al 1997 ; Benassayag et al 2003 ; Percival-Smith et al 2017 ). All 3 of these findings corroborate and extend the gynandromorph fate map data arguing that the eye-antennal disc derives from a single embryonic segment that fissions into multiple segments during larval life.…”
