The Norwegian PraksisNett: a nationwide practice-based research network with a novel IT infrastructure

Abstract: Purpose Clinical research in primary care is relatively scarce. Practice-based research networks (PBRNs) are research infrastructures to overcome hurdles associated with conducting studies in primary care. In Norway, almost all 5.4 million inhabitants have access to a general practitioner (GP) through a patient-list system. This gives opportunity for a PBRN with reliable information about the general population. The aim of the current paper is to describe the establishment, organization and functi… Show more

“…The GPs surgeries are connected to the network through an advanced IT infrastructure named Snow. In the Snow system, no central database is required, and all patient data are stored within the IT infrastructure in each GP surgery ensuring the anonymity of patient information [ 11 ]. This Snow infrastructure enables identification of potential study participants based on e.g., diagnoses.…”

“…Participating GPs will be recruited nationwide using the Norwegian Primary Care Research Network (PraksisNett, www.uib.no/praksisnett ), which is a research infrastructure of close to 500 GPs that facilitates recruitment of primary care patients to clinical studies [ 34 ]. Additional GPs will be recruited through direct invitation and promotion at conferences and social media targeted at GPs.…”

“…In some cases, even with consent, pseudonymized datasets might still be used to identify individuals. To address this, decentralized, federated analysis methods 102 , 103 , 104 , 105 can be used to ensure individual-level analysis without linking data across different sources (see below under Political and structural barriers ). These methods are increasingly being used in general health systems, but yet rarely used in the context of migrant and refugee health.…”
