The Notion and Assessment of ‘Predatory’ in Scholarly Publishing

Abstract: The notion of predatory publishing as a foil for “traditional” publishing encourages a binary differentiation between subscription publishing and all other forms of scholarly discourse. By leaning into the familiar, publishers and those seeking to maintain control, profit, and prestige in the publishing ecosystem label all other forms as other or predatory and conflate innovation with scam.
