“…The median reduction in viral RNA was 9.2 fold and this finding appears to be strongly related to the downregulation of ACE2 expression mediated by Lantigen B in target cells. Notably, this 10-fold reduction of virus yield, evaluated by rt-PCR is similar to the results observed by Vercelli and co-workers using the reduction of the number of plaque forming units [10].…”

“…In a recent interesting article [9], the authors showed that a bacterial lysate developed decades ago (OM-85) has the capability of reducing the expression of ACE2 both in cell lines and in primary cells from human airways. This finding suggests that the administration of OM-85, which would reduce the expression of ACE2, could to some extent inhibit respiratory tract target cell infection, acting as a prophylactic treatment to be used in association with vaccines and other future therapies.…”

“…The study design was approved by the local ethical committee under the protocol CAAE nº 30754220. These data are in line with the previously seen effect of OM-85 pre-treatment on SARS-CoV-2 infection (8). Interestingly, expression of viral N1 gene was significantly reduced in cells treated with OM-85 compared to untreated control (Figure 1d).…”

“…OM-85 can be effective in preventing severe coronavirus infection in mice when administered through the oral route [7]. Additionally, the SARS-CoV-2 receptor ACE-2 is downregulated in the lungs of mice treated intranasally with OM-85 [8]. The concept that OM-85 directly administrated into the airways modulates immune response has been previously explored to prevent asthma and respiratory syncytial virus infection in mice [9, 10].…”
