The Omental Pedicle Flap in Dogs Revised and Refined: A Cadaver Study

Abstract: When lengthening the omentum is necessary to reach extra-abdominal structures, the omental pedicle flap based on the splenic artery appears to preserve the omental vascular supply. These observations warrant further clinical trials to evaluate this new omtental flap technique in vivo.

“…Its adhesive properties aid in providing vascularisation and tissue coverage. 18 – 20 Because of its considerable size and adaptability, the omentum has found wide application in various procedures, including hepatic, prostatic and pancreatic cysts and abscess management. 18 , 20 , 21 In this case, omentalisation was employed to aid in resolving the infection.…”

To our knowledge, omentalisation has not been previously described for managing exposed SUB shunting ports and represents an innovative approach to addressing this complication.…”

“…We used the omentum because of its documented effectiveness in treating several infectious processes, with its rich network of arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels. 17,26 We believe that omentum's adhesion to the site sealed and cleaned the area, via angiogenesis, haemostasis and re-innervation.…”

“…The omentum was lengthened via creation of an omental pedicle flap to ensure the omentum reached to the level of the perineal incision without tension. 5 The Yankauer suction tip was removed and the nylon tape was subsequently attached to the omentum. The nylon tape was pulled into a craniocaudal direction bringing the omentum into the perineal surgical site.…”
