The Optimization of Solar Drying of Grain by Using a Genetic Algorithm

Abstract: Particularly in the low drying temperature drying is an energy intensive process and requires a suitable optimization technique. This work represents the kinetic simulation and energy efficient optimization technique for drying long grain, i.e. rice. At 30-60 • C temperature the grains have been dried in a solar powered air dryer. After certain time interval the enzymatic activity and the moisture content have been measured. Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been used for the simulation and the optimization process w… Show more

“…The theoretical models can be divided into single-phase model and multiphase model. The single-phase model assumes that diffusion drives moisture migration, but only considers mass transfer and conduction as energy transfer mechanisms without accounting for other important drying properties (Rahman et al, 2015;Kumar et al, 2016). The multi-phase model considers the coupled three-phase mass and heat transfer of liquid water, gas, and solid in the drying of porous materials.…”

“…High cost of production and diminishing economic returns from agricultural practices are affecting the socio-economic condition of the farmers. Loss of soil fertility, erosion of soil, soil toxicity, diminishing water resources, pollution of underground water, salinity of underground water, increased incidence of human and livestock diseases, and the risk of food toxicity enhances with indiscriminate and disproportionate use of Agro-chemicals (Rahman, 2015). Application of Chemical fertilizers induced higher crop productivity but at the same time they also led to the alteration of soil physicochemical and biological properties, decline of soil organic matter (SOM) content coupled with a decrease in the quality of agricultural soil (Pahalvi, 2021).…”

“…It is common for dried food to have less than 25% water content and a water activity of less than 0.06 [ 9 , 10 ]. Food drying may enhance storage capacity, reduce production needs, and decrease the weight and transportation costs of food [ 11 ]. The drying process not only helps to preserve the product but also has the potential to improve the overall quality of the materials and to produce value-added compounds.…”
