The oral bioavailability of ibuprofen enantiomers in broiler chickens

Abstract: Doses of racemic ibuprofen ranging from 5 to 20 mg/kg body weight were administered intravenously (i.v.) and orally to broiler chickens and plasma concentration-time profiles for both ibuprofen enantiomers were determined. The absorption of ibuprofen was evaluated after a bolus administration of a commercially available suspension into the crop and proventriculus, respectively. An enterohepatic circulation as described for other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in other species could be suggested … Show more

“…However, it should be mentioned that the calculation of pharmacokinetic parameters (for example bioavailability) using classical compartmental or noncompartmental methods may be distorted for nonlinear drugs [21]. The difference in bioavailability between humans and birds is in accordance with findings with other molecules [22] and can be influenced by presystemical metabolization and/or gastrointestinal motility.…”

“…The pharmacokinetics of SA had been described in several bird species (Baert & Backer, 2003) and other species (Short et al, 1990a;b;Waters et al, 1993). A significant species difference was found in pharmacokinetic parameters for SA.…”

“…There are few studies of the pharmacokinetics of NSAIDs in birds have been published (Roder et al. , 1996; Cristòfol, 2000; Vermeulen & Remon, 2001; Baert & Backer, 2002, 2003; Baert et al. , 2002, 2004).…”
