The organisation of critical care for burn patients in the UK: epidemiology and comparison of mortality prediction models

Abstract: In the UK, a network of specialist centres has been set up to provide critical care for burn patients. However, some burn patients are admitted to general intensive care units. Little is known about the casemix of these patients and how it compares with patients in specialist burn centres. It is not known whether burn-specific or generic risk prediction models perform better when applied to patients managed in intensive care units. We examined admissions for burns in the Case Mix Programme Database from April … Show more

“…14 Some developed countries have reported mortality rates in critically ill-burned patients with no differences between general and burn ICUs despite the severity of the burns being worse in the burn ICU patients. [15][16][17] There are no similar studies from developing countries. Almost three-quarters of our patients were men and mostly young, in common with most other studies, which is probably due to high-risk jobs or reckless manipulation of burn sources.…”

“…However, our mortality rate was similar or lower than reported in the studies by Ibarra et al and Güldogan et al in Mexico and Turkey, respectively, although there was a difference in the extension of the burns too. [15][16][17][18][19][20][21] In most studies, the extension of the burn has proven to be an independent predictor of mortality. 17,19,20,[24][25][26][27] This relationship between extension of the burn and mortality seems to be undeniable, mainly when TBSA is >40%.…”
