The organized nature of flow impingement upon a corner

Abstract: Oscillations of impinging flows, which date back to the jet-edge phenomenon (Sondhaus 1854), have been observed for a wide variety of impingement configurations. However, alteration of the structure of the shear layer due to insertion of an impingement edge (or surface) and the mechanics of impingement of vortical structures upon an edge have remained largely uninvestigated. In this study, the impingement of a shear layer upon a cavity edge (or corner) is examined in detail. Water is used as a working fluid an… Show more

“…The h/L o resonance threshold values found here are above ones observed in literature for shallow cavities of around h=L o ð Þ shallow % 1 Â 10 À2 to 6 Â 10 À2 based on the current Reynolds number (Rockwell and Knisely 1979;Gharib and Roshko 1987;Sarohia 1977). This indicates an increased tendency to lock-on due to coupling with a resonator volume.…”

“…Rounding of the downstream edge will reduce or even suppress the resonance behavior. This has already been indicated in literature, where vortex-edge interaction plays a critical role (Kooijman et al 2008;Rockwell and Knisely 1979). PIV results are used to aid the physical interpretation of the mechanism.…”

“…When the ratio exceeds 120, however, the oscillations shift to the wake mode, causing an abrupt increase in the drag. Many other studies of incompressible flows over an open cavity support the notion that the incoming laminar boundary layer can generate self-sustained oscillations due to shear layer instabilities [8][9][10][11][12].…”
