The Origin of the White Roman Goose

Abstract: In order to avoid interference from nuclear copies of mitochondrial DNA (numts), mtDNA of the white Roman goose (domestic goose) was extracted from liver mitochondria. The mtDNA control region was amplified using a long PCR strategy and then sequenced. Neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony, and maximum-likelihood approaches were implemented using the 1,177 bp mtDNA control region sequences to compute the phylogenetic relationships of the domestic goose with other geese. The resulting identity values for the whit… Show more

“…Interestingly, the ANS19 sequence was recently found in the white Roman goose in Taiwan. This race is widely bred for commercial purposes, and has been found to originate from the European species ( Anser anser , Wang et al, 2010 ). Our data confirm the presence of this sequence in Europe, particularly in the breeding population of the Norwegian west coast.…”

“…In Asia, white geese are mostly descendants of the swan goose ( Anser cygnoides ). Even if descendants of Anser anser can also be found there, they are usually farmed in Europe ( Wang et al, 2010 ). Although the two species can hybridize in captivity, hybrids can be detected through karyotype ( Shahin, Ata & Shnaf, 2014 ) or genotype examinations ( Sun et al, 2014 ).…”

“…White Roman geese, the European domestic breed, were de rived from grayleg goose ( Anser anser ), while Chinese geese, the Chinese domestic geese breed, were originated from swan goose ( Anser cygnoides ) according to analyses of their morphology and mitochondrial DNA polymorphism [ 10 , 11 ]. Microsatellite makers have already been applied in testing domestic geese for genetic diversity and genetic structures in some areas.…”

“…The European domestic goose is descended from wild greylag goose ( A. anser ) [ 3 , 4 ] and based on its pink bill coloration more likely from the eastern subspecies ( Anser anser rubrirostris ) than the nominate western subspecies ( Anser anser anser ) [ 5 ]. The domestication process of the greylag goose followed the prey pathway, in which the species was first being hunted before more intensive herd-management started [ 6 ].…”
