The outcome of kidney transplants with multiple renal arteries

Abstract: BackgroundThe use of grafts with multiple renal arteries has been considered a relative contraindication because of the increased incidence of vascular and urologic complications The aim of this study is to determine whether the kidney grafts with multiple arteries have any adverse effect upon post-transplant graft and patient survival.MethodsWe reviewed the records of 225 adult kidney transplants done consecutively at our institution. Twenty-nine patients (12.8%) had grafts with multiple renal arteries. We an… Show more

“…Some reports have indicated that the lymphatic cysts are more likely to occur when there are multiple renal arteries (22)(23)(24). This is likely because of the large number of lymphatic vessels around the renal hilum.…”

“…Authors of these studies did not find differences in the outcomes when comparing the patients who received a multiple artery graft with those who received a single pedicle kidney (1, 10-16). Some authors even concluded that every anomaly or injury in the extraction had to be overcome in bench surgery (4).…”

“…The frequency of MRAs is between 18 and 30% in cadaveric series and these can be successfully transplanted even with laparoscopy [4] . In renal allotransplantations with MRA kidney the ischemia period is lengthened and there is the need to anastomose more than one vessel resulting in theoretically higher rates of complications and rejections.…”
