The Outsourcing of Industrial Design Services by Large US Manufacturing Companies

Abstract: This article examines the extent to which US producers of durable goods outsource design and development work to external organizations. Evidence from a sample of sixty-eight large manufacturing companies suggests that independent design consultancies and other design service vendors contribute significantly to the product development efforts of major corporations. External organizations are increasingly expected to deliver innovative design solutions with respect to materials selection, aesthetics, ergonomics… Show more

“…Bryson and Daniels (2010) also suggest that intermediate business services support services produced in-house. Using survey data on 50 manufacturing firms in the US, MacPherson and Vanchan (2010) find that the purchase of industrial design services is complementary to in-house core competences. The outsourcing of industrial design services is often related to the acquisition of superior services or totally new services, which is unlikely to reduce in-house services (see also MacPherson, 2008).…”

“…There are several underlying factors that contribute to the rising importance of services in manufacturing. These include increasing product complexity, product differentiation, and access to new and superior services that complement in-house services (Francois, 1990;MacPherson & Vanchan, 2010;Peneder et al, 2003).…”

“…Many researchers point out that the relationship of KIBS with manufacturing industries is more intensive in comparison to that with other industries (Guerrieri and Meliciani 2005;MacPherson and Vanchan 2010;Preissl 2007). The independent variable is KIBS input and the dependent variable is innovation in manufacturing industries **p < 0.01, *p < 0.05 The quadratic model states that the innovation of manufacturing industries is equal to 1.189* KIBS input squared.…”

“…The importance of design in the American economy is so great that, in 2003, it was estimated that exports of design services accounted for 15% of all U.S. exports of professional, technical and business services (Vanchan, 2006). In 2008, imports of design services had a share of 35% in expenses with hiring external design services (not performed within the companies themselves) and came mostly from the U.K., France and Italy (MacPherson and Vanchan, 2010). Nevertheless, Vanchan's study showed that U.S. design firms did not consider exporting important in terms of growth and success.…”
