The paleohistology of †Araripichthys castilhoifrom the Lower Cretaceous of Araripe Basin, Northeastern Brazil: a typical case of basal teleost

Abstract: †Araripichthys castilhoi belongs to the paleo-ichthyofauna from the Aptian calcareous concretions of Romualdo Member, Santana Formation, Araripe Basin, northeast Brazil. It was originally placed within Beryciformes (Acanthomorphata) by a combination of plesiomorphic and apomorphic characters. Later, an anatomical review of †Araripichthys demonstrated the presence of several primitive characters (cf. presence of fin spines, orbitosphenoid, two supramaxillae, seven hypurals, autogenous hypurals 1 and 2, second u… Show more

“…Another mid-Cretaceous taxon with uncertain relationships within the teleosts is Araripichthys. This genus has been referred variously to Beryciformes, Lampridiformes, Elopocephala incertae sedis, Elopomorpha, Pachyrhizodontoidei, Protobramoidei (see Maisey and Moody [27] and Mayrinck et al [30] for reviews). Even in a recent analysis combining anatomical and paleohistological data, Araripichthys was still recovered in an incertae sedis position as a basal teleost [30].…”
