The past and present of triangulation and social representations theory: A crossed history

Abstract: This paper examines some of the main processes in the evolution of triangulation in qualitative research (QR) and social representations theory (SRT) in social psychology in recent decades. By adopting a cross-historical approach, we seek to outline how SRT can strengthen its epistemological approach by embracing triangulation, and to highlight that an examination of past and current debates on SRT can provide relevant insights for QR in psychology. We show how, progressively over time, in both fields (SRT and… Show more

“…In addition, by treating the texts in multiple ways, we problematize the notion that social behaviour inherently requires a qualitative or quantitative mode of inquiry. Likewise, our research evidences the value in always remaining committed to the research question throughout the research process, and in particular, creatively drawing on the complementary types of analyses to contribute to gaps in understanding (Caillaud et al, 2019). However, we acknowledge that this might not always be feasible and will likely be constrained by aspects such as ethics approval, sample sizes calculations and the experimental procedures involved.…”

“…The results clearly highlight the different tensions underpinning the construction of SR of psychology and psychologists in different in-between spaces (study 1 and 2) and how these tensions evolve when the two in-between spaces come together (study 3). The study thus engages with both the content and the dynamic of SR. On a methodological level, this article also illustrates (1) how SRT can actively contribute to the development of methodological triangulation (resorting to the wind-rose model offers a way to theoretically combine results from different methods); and (2) how methodological triangulation can strengthen SRT (here by articulating the content and the dynamic of SR, Caillaud et al, 2019).…”

“…Also, single items scales present a limitation related primarily to their content validity and reliability (Aiken, 1980). Thus, future research based on methodological triangulation might contribute to increase the ecological validity of applied research conducted in post-terrorist contexts, and the comprehension of psychosocial processes that occur in complex societal contexts (Caillaud, Doumergue, Préau, Haas, & Kalampalikis, 2019;Flick, 1992).…”
