The Patient Experience of Drug Side Effects in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Intriguing Data From an Exploratory Online Survey

Abstract: Understanding adverse events (AEs) of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is critical to both patients and clinicians. AEs—"side effects" from the patient perspective—contribute significantly to patients' disease experience by interfering with activities of daily living and quality of life (QOL).1

“…Furthermore, since the treatment of RA is a long-term process, the side effects of these drugs are inevitable, including immunosuppression, gastrointestinal ulcers, osteoporosis, nausea, fatigue, cytopenia, rashes, liver damage, infections, and psoriasis. [479][480][481][482] Therefore, it is an urgent need to develop novel therapeutic strategies that enhance efficacy and reduce toxicity.…”

“…However, the efficacy of drug treatment limited by the drug’s short effective half-life and its insufficient ability to specifically target diseased tissues, leading to poor clinical outcomes ( 5 ). Furthermore, upon in vivo administration, the drug is disseminated throughout the body, resulting in an elevated risk of side effects on extra-articular organs ( 6 ).…”

“…the power wall. The power wall becomes more detrimental in advanced technology nodes due to several factors: (1) the introduction of Design Technology Co-Optimization (DTCO) around 20nm technology node has ensured that the transistor density keeps up with Moore's law projection, but power supply voltage scales much slower down the road thus making power density higher and higher from node to node, (2) to bridge the gap between processing capability and data availability due to Fig. 1: Data center electricity consumption breakdown in U.S. for the year 2014 [1].…”

“…A typical metric that measures the energy efficiency of data centers is Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) which is the total energy needed for everything, including cooling and lighting, divided by the energy used for IT equipments (a PUE of 1.0 is ideal). As per a recent data center survey report [2], the global average PUE in 2022 seems to saturate at 1.55 signifying ∼ 55% of total energy in a data center (on average) is now being expended on support infrastructure including cooling. In addition, it has sustainability challenges when it comes to their carbon footprints and CO 2 emissions.…”
