The Pattern of Antibiotic Prescribing by Dental Practitioners in Zagreb, Croatia

Abstract: The examined subjects prescribe antibiotics according to the curriculum taught at the School of Dental Medicine for majority of types, doses and duration of the treatments, although antibiotics over-prescription in cases without medical indication was observed. The national guidelines on antibiotic regimens are required in order to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use.

“…If there had not been any improvement in the following two days, additional metronidazole would have been administered. Our results are comparable to those of Perić et al ( 19 ) on the use of antibiotics in Zagreb in 2015, according to which the use of penicillin antibiotics was observed in the treatment of dental diseases in 72.5% of cases, in 57.6% of which penicillins were combined with clavulanic acid.…”

“…However, different surveys have shown that Spanish ( 9 , 10 ), European ( 11 - 13 ) and also worldwide ( 14 ), dentists follow inadequate prescribing patterns of systemic antibiotics in the treatment of endodontic infections. In the recently published study by Martín-Jiménez et al ( 15 ) analysing dental students’ knowledge regarding the indications for antibiotics in the management of endodontic infections, has shown that nearly 50% of the students of the last year of the degree of dentistry would apply inappropriate antibiotic guidelines in the treatment of endodontic infections.…”

“…Amoxicillin/clavulanate was the most frequently prescribed antibiotic in our study, which is similar to a study of antibiotic prescribing in dental practice in Belgium 6 and a study conducted in Croatia that showed 60.0% of doctors prescribed amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. 7 Furthermore, a study of therapeutic antibiotic prescribing in National Health Service general dental practice in England revealed that the most frequently prescribed antibiotic was amoxicillin. 8 In Scotland, it was recorded that 17 types of antibiotics were prescribed by general dental practitioners, in which amoxicillin accounted for 1743 prescriptions and amoxycillin, metronidazole, and penicillin V accounting for almost 90% of the prescriptions.…”
