The Pēpi‐Pod study: Overnight video, oximetry and thermal environment while using an in‐bed sleep device for sudden unexpected death in infancy prevention

Abstract: Overall, we found that most differences in infant risk behaviours in a Pēpi-Pod compared to a bassinet were small, with confidence intervals excluding meaningful differences. We noted poorer maternal sleep quality at 1 month. Higher infant heart rates in the Pēpi-Pod group may be related to higher room temperatures. The Pēpi-Pod appears physiologically safe but is associated with lower reported maternal sleep quality.

“…In Australia and New Zealand, the indigenous Maori populations have a greater risk of infants dying of sudden unexpected death. In studies done by Baddock et al () and Tipene‐Leach et al (), they evaluated the benefits of providing the Pepi‐Pod or Wahakura versus a bassinet for the indigenous mothers to use. The Pepi‐Pod and the Wahakura are types of small beds that can be used in the bed and protects the infants from rolling out or the parent from rolling over onto the child.…”

“…The Pepi‐Pod and the Wahakura are types of small beds that can be used in the bed and protects the infants from rolling out or the parent from rolling over onto the child. The use of these beds increased the number of infants who were breastfed, but there were no significant differences in the infant sleep position (Baddock et al, ; Tipene‐Leach et al, ).…”

“…One concern is that rebreathing expired air can result in potentially higher concentrations of carbon dioxide in the baby box, which can pose an increased risk of sleep-related death. 6,14 A second concern related to ventilation is whether poor ventilation places infants at risk of overheating. Empirical evidence associates overheating with an increased risk of infant suffocation during sleep.…”

“…These devices are currently being studied in New Zealand, to avoid potentially hazardous bed sharing situations (when parents smoke or drink alcohol); initial findings are extremely encouraging 1112131415. The cardboard baby box, however, is not intended to be used in the parental bed and thus offers no better alternative to bed sharing than the cot, bassinet, or Moses basket.…”
