The perceived quality of soundscape in three urban parks in Rome

Abstract: The present paper reports a socio-acoustic survey carried out in three large urban parks in Rome, selected on the basis of the outcome of a preliminary online survey. According to the experimental protocol applied in a previous study carried out in Milan and Naples, binaural recordings in 85 sites and interviews with 266 users of the three parks were performed only during the day in summertime. On the basis of selected acoustical descriptors, the sonic environment of the three parks was categorized and, thanks… Show more

“…Indeed, the European Environment Agency in its "Good practice guide" acknowledges 'soundscaping' as one of the strategies to identify and manage quiet areas (European Environment Agency, 2014), thus a lot of research efforts focused on this one particular soundscape: quietness and tranquillity (e.g., Pheasant, Watts, & Horoshenkov, 2009;García, Aspuru, Herranz, & Bustamante, 2013;Brambilla, Gallo, Asdrubali, & D'Alessandro, 2013;Brambilla & Gallo, 2016). Nonetheless, there is still a need to systematically provide the underpinning science and practical guidance in soundscaping.…”

“…At the city scale, previous works have selectively emphasized the quantitative assessment of parks concerning traffic noise reduction (Cohen et al, 2014;González-Oreja et al, 2010). Other studies investigating also the users' perception of the acoustic quality in the parks have been performed by Brambilla et al, 2013;Brambilla & Maffei, 2006;Weber, 2012. However, there is little evidence on the effect of green spaces as a land use parameter on traffic noise. The most frequent use is through land use regression (LUR) models (Goudreau et al, 2014;Ragettli et al, 2016), or in a local scale through the TRAP tool by Pheasant et al (2010), which can be very useful in the absence of noise maps, but still of limited range and dependent on on-site noise measurements.…”
