The Percentage of Signet Ring Cells Is Inversely Related to Aggressive Behavior and Poor Prognosis in Mixed-Type Gastric Cancer

Abstract: Background and ObjectivesOnly recently the percentage of signet ring cells (SRCs) in gastric cancer (GC) has been proposed as an independent predictor of survival. High amounts of SRCs have been related to lower recurrence and mortality rates, better prognosis, and favorable clinicopathological features in a poorly cohesive histotype. It is not known what the effect of SRC percentage in mixed-type GC is. We investigate the role of SRCs as a prognostic marker in mixed-histotype GC.MethodsA retrospective analysi… Show more

“…Signet ring cell involvement has been believed to influence several tumor characteristics, including cancer aggressiveness, metastatic organotropism, and prognosis. 8 Similar to previously published cases of GC with signet ring cells, our patient had no metastatic involvement of the liver, lymph nodes, or peritoneum 9 (the most common metastatic sites in GC). Despite first-pass physiology and apparent hematogenous spread of this patient's cancer (evidenced by cutaneous and osseous involvement), he did not have active disease in the liver.…”

“…According to previous observations, poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas with signet-ring cell characteristics are closely related to the occurrence of cutaneous metastases. The proportion of SRC is inversely related to aggressive behavior, higher risk of metastases and poor prognosis in mixed-type gastric cancer (6). Some of the potential mechanisms are hematogenous or lymphatic metastasis.…”

“…There is no dispute that the older and more advanced the cancer, the poorer the prognosis. With regard to histological type, it has been shown that the undifferentiated type has a poorer prognosis [ 18 , 19 ]. In this study, patients with differentiated cancer had a higher proportion of elderly patients aged 70 years or older than those with undifferentiated cancer, which may have affected the prognosis.…”
