The performance of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in small solitary pulmonary nodules

Abstract: Solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN, intraparenchymal lung mass <3 cm) is often a diagnostic challenge. This study was performed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of( 18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) in radiologically indeterminate SPN < or =10 mm on spiral CT. Between August 1997 and March 2001, we identified all patients with radiologically indeterminate SPNs < or =10 mm who were referred for FDG PET imaging at the VU University Medical Centre. All PET scans were retrospectively re… Show more

“…PET with 18 F-FDG has been shown to be useful in the detection of malignancy in pulmonary nodules (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). FDG, a glucose analog, is taken up by metabolically active cells and phosphorylated by the enzyme hexokinase.…”

“…PET does have important limitations. First, PET is less sensitive for nodules less than 8 -10 mm in diameter [35]- [37] also, false-negative PET scans can be seen in patients with adenocarcinoma in situ, carcinoid tumors, and mucinous adenocarcinomas. False positive PET scans can be seen in patients with inflammatory conditions (sarcoidosis or rheumatoid nodules) or infectious processes (endemic mycosis or mycobacterial infection).…”

“…18 F-FDG PET and PET/CT have been widely studied in the detection of lung cancers for diagnosis, staging, and restaging (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16). However, in developing countries, the high cost of this equipment and the lack of general availability have limited their widespread clinical use.…”
